Archiving Faith: Record-Keeping and Catholic Community Formation in Eighteenth-Century Mesopotamia

Abstract This article investigates the archiving practices of a little-known group Catholics in Ottoman Empire, Diyarbakır Chaldeans, late seventeenth and eighteenth centuries. It argues for flexible definition archives, based not on traditional characteristics such as links to defined institutional repository, but their purpose community formation. The loose structure Chaldean Church resulted an unconventional archive, which never had one physical centre consisted largely liturgical manuscripts; nonetheless, it recorded recognizably archival material gained cohesion from overlapping circles families, scribes churches involved its production, well systematic innovations scribal practices. archive only reflected distinctive form also contributed creating reshaping it.
